Stockbrokers watch the way businesses grow and then trade their shares. Some businesses are broken down into small portions called stocks or shares and these shares can then be bought by lots of different people.

Depending on how many stocks or shares they have, people might have some say in how the business is run. A stockbroker is someone who buys and sells stocks and shares on behalf of other people. The price of stocks and shares goes up and down, so a key part of the job is to buy stocks when they are cheap and then sell them when their price rises thus making a profit.

Because you are being entrusted with large amounts of money that belong to other people, you need to be responsible and honest — no-one wants to lose their money because you were careless.

The actions you take have the potential to affect companies, economies and the public. It may also work in your favour if you speak a second language so that you are able to communicate with clients in their first language. It takes a head for numbers, hard work, some good luck and bags of confidence to make it as a stockbroker.
